What causes hangovers?

Dehydration

Alcohol is a diuretic, ie a drug that increases urination and flushes fluids from the body. Drinking

coffee the next morning only increases this problem as coffee is also a diuretic.

Mild poisons in the drink

Complex organic molecules such as methanol and acetone are found in some drinks and are said

to be responsible for hangovers rather than ethanol (alcohol). This view is by researcher Dr Ian

Calder of the London based National Hospital for Neurosurgery.

Which Alcohol is worse?

Brandy is worst for hangovers, then in descending order are: red wine, rum, whisky, white wine,

gin and vodka. The British Medical Journal did tests that showed drinking bourbon whiskey is

twice as likely to cause a hangover than the same amount of vodka.

Too much alcohol

Too much alcohol depletes the body of necessary substances required to stay healthy, these

include blood sugar, vitamins and minerals.

Biology of a Hangover: Congeners

Different types of alcohol can result in different hangover symptoms. This is because some types of alcoholic

drinks have a higher concentration of congeners, byproducts of fermentation in some alcohol.

Congeners are toxic chemicals that are formed during fermentation, some liquors have more of

them than others. These congeners are widely responsible for headaches. Simple digest: The

clearer your drinks, the less problems you will have the next morning. (Correct only for brandy.

Non filtered beer for example can be very good, specially because they contain a large vitamin b

complex, which is important to protect you from brain pickling)

For instance:

* Vodka has less congeners than gin.

* Most scotch whiskey has about four times more congeners than gin.

* Brandy, rum and single-malt scotch have about six times more than gin.

* Bourbon drinkers ingest eight times the amount of congeners as do gin drinkers, and 30 times
as much as vodka.

* Red wine has more congeners than white wine does.

The greatest amounts of these toxins are found in red wine and dark liquors such as bourbon, brandy, whiskey

and tequila. White wine and clear liquors such as rum, vodka and gin have fewer congeners and therefore cause

less frequent and less severe hangovers. In one study, 33 percent of those who drank an amount of bourbon

relative to their body weight reported severe hangover, compared to 3 percent of those who drank the same

amount of vodka.

Be a head light

Mirror's before, during & after-drinking plan to keep you fresh as a daisy this December.

December has to be the month when we drink more than other months. Which means you up your

chances of a hangover at the end of the year, too. But you can enjoy a few drinks without the dreaded

'morning-after' with a bit of know-how. Here's how.

BEFORE THE NIGHT OUT

Eat something

Even if you're dining out, chances are you'll start drinking first, which increases the rate of alcohol

absorption. You don't have to eat much, but choose something that will stay in your stomach for a while.

A wholegrain cheese sandwich is ideal: the combination of protein, fat and low GI bread will delay the

absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream.

WHILE BOOZING

Drink moderately

Try interspersing soft drinks with each alcoholic one. This slowsdown the absorption of alcohol into

your

bloodstream, counters dehydration and helps remove toxins. If you're out dancing, take a bottle of

water

on the dance floor with you.

Be smart about choices

Clear spirits like vodka and white wine have the least congeners — toxins produced during fermentation

that give drinks their colour. As a rule, researchers have found that the darker the drink (red wine,

whisky, brandy etc), the more congeners they contain and the worse your hangover will be. Choose fruit

juice mixers as fizzy drinks increase the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream.

Avoid extra ice

Very cold drinks encourage you to gulp rather than sip. If you're drinking wine, avoid cheap plonk. The

better the quality, the fewer toxins, meaning less risk of a sore head next morning.

Beware of communal kitties

Drinking should be a choice not an obligation, so don't insist if someone declines a refill. Try making a

fruit punch or experiment with 'mocktails' so that your nondrinking guests have an option.

AFTER BOOZING

Drink water or milk at the end

And again before you hit the sack - this gives your body a head-start on the road to recovery and reduces

your risk of a hangover. Milk is an anti-diuretic, so it stops the kidneys producing urine which means you

can rehydrate the body without waking up to go to the loo.

THE NEXT MORNING

Take paracetamol

Aspirin or ibuprofen can irritate the stomach so choose paracetamol and an antacid to settle nausea. If

you're feeling really rough, try a rehydration treatment sachet to replace lost minerals and salt.

Eat breakfast

Choose a slow release carbohydrate for sustained energy, such as eggs (scrambled, poached or boiled) on

wholegrain toast. Eggs contain cysteine which breaks up acetaldehyde, a hangover-causing toxin, as well

as essential fatty acids needed to help the liver heal your body. Can't face anything cooked? Try natural

yoghurt and honey. The yoghurt restores the equilibrium of natural bacteria to your intestines to

prevent you being sick while honey replaces lost electrolytes such as sodium and potassium.

Try acupressure

A DIY acupressure point that's effective for nausea is located on the inside of the wrist - three finger-

widths back from the creases of the wrist, between the tendons. Place your index finger, middle finger

and ring finger in a line so that the index rests on the crease in the middle of your wrist and the ring finger

is at the base of your palm. Then press with the ring finger for 20 to 30 seconds and stroke down towards

the wrist. - Daily Mirror
