भारत के संदर्भ में विश्वएड्स दिवस:एक दिसंबर ,२०१३ आश्वस्त करता प्रतीत होता है। जहां दुनिया भर में २००५-१२ के दरमियान एच आई वी -एड्स से होने वाली मौतों में ५०% वृद्धि हुई है ,१० -१९ साला आयुवर्ग के बीस लाख से ज्यादा नए लोग इस संक्रमण की चपेट में आयें हैं वहीँ भारत में गत दशक मै नए संक्रमण के ५७%मामले कम दर्ज़ हुए हैं।

THE HAPPY NEWS ON THE HIV EPIDEMIC FRONT CONTINUES .JUST WHEN UNITED NATIONS AIDS (UNAIDS)HAS PRAISED INDIA FOR REDUCING NEW HIV INFECTION RATE BY 57 % IN A DECADE ,NEWS FROM MUMBAI SHOWS THAT THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS PUT ON LIFE SAVING DRUGS HAS ALMOST DOUBLED IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS .FIGURES RELEASED BY THE MUMBAI DISTRICT AIDS CONTROL SOCIETY (MDACS)ON THE EVE OF WORLD AIDS DAY SHOW THAT 36,920 HIV PATIENTS IN THE CITY HAVE BEEN PUT ON ANTI -RETROVIRAL THERAPY (ART )OVER THE YEARS .
THE THERAPY HAS BEEN INSTRUEMENTAL IN CHANGING THE PERCEPTION OF AIDS FROM BEING A DEATH SENTENCE TO A MANAGEABLE CHRONIC DISEASE .
"THIS IS A 96.2% INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS TAKING ART SINCE 2008,"SAID DR B ADSUL ,ADDITIONAL PROJECT DIRECTOR AT MDACS.THE NUMBER SHOW THAT THE AIDS -CONTROL PROGRAMME IS SPREADING WIDER INTO THE COMMUNITY .THE CITY'S GOVERNMENT AIDED AIDS CONTROL PROGRAMME HAS REGISTRATIONS OF 67,326 PATIENTS ACROSS THE CITY .
"IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS ,WE HAVE MANAGED TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS COMING TO US FOR TREATMENT BY 60% ,"SAID DR ADSUL .THAT HIV -POSITIVE INDIVIDUALS ARE LIVING HEALTHIER LIVES CAN BE GAUGED FROM THE FACT ALMOST 40% OF THE REGISTERED PATIENTS DON'T NEED ART YET ,SAID AN MDACS OFFICIAL .

IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS ,THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE GETTING THEMSELVES CHECKED FOR THE DISEASE HAS GONE UP BY 39 % .THE NUMBER OF PREGNANT WOMEN GETTING THEMSELVES CHECKED FOR HIV HAS INCREASED BY 5%.

Declining new HIV infections in children
New HIV infections among adults and children were estimated at 2.3 million in 2012, a 33% reduction since 2001. New HIV infections among children have been reduced to 260 000 in 2012, a reduction of 52% since 2001.
Fewer AIDS-related deaths
AIDS-related deaths have also dropped by 30% since the peak in 2005 as access to antiretroviral treatmentexpands.

Despite a flattening in donor funding for HIV, which has remained around the same as 2008 levels, domestic spending on HIV has increased, accounting for 53% of global HIV resources in 2012. The total global resources available for HIV in 2012 was estimated at US$ 18.9 billion, US$ 3-5 billion short of the US$ 22-24 billion estimated to be needed annually by 2015.

In 2012, an estimated:
- 35.3 million [32.2 million - 38.8 million] people globally were living with HIV
- 2.3 million [1.9 million - 2.7 million] people became newly infected with HIV
- 1.6 million [1.4 million - 1.9 million] people died from AIDS-related illnesses
10 goals for 2015
- Sexual transmission of HIV reduced by half, including among young people, men who have sex with men and transmission in the context of sex work;
- Vertical transmission of HIV eliminated and AIDS-related maternal deaths reduced by half;
- All new HIV infections prevented among people who use drugs;
- Universal access to antiretroviral therapy for people living with HIV who are eligible for treatment;
- TB deaths among people living with HIV reduced by half;
- All people living with HIV and households affected by HIV are addressed in all national social protection strategies and have access to essential care and support;
- Countries with punitive laws and practices around HIV transmission, sex work, drug use or homosexuality that block effective responses reduced by half;
- HIV-related restrictions on entry, stay and residence eliminated in half of the countries that have such restrictions;
- HIV-specific needs of women and girls are addressed in at least half of all national HIV responses;
- Zero tolerance for gender-based violence.
