भारत के संदर्भ में विश्वएड्स दिवस:एक दिसंबर ,२०१३  आश्वस्त करता प्रतीत होता है। जहां दुनिया भर में २००५-१२ के दरमियान एच आई वी -एड्स से होने वाली मौतों में ५०% वृद्धि हुई है ,१० -१९ साला आयुवर्ग के बीस लाख से ज्यादा नए लोग इस संक्रमण की चपेट में आयें हैं वहीँ भारत में गत दशक मै  नए संक्रमण के ५७%मामले कम दर्ज़ हुए हैं। 

मुम्बई नगरी ने भी इस दिशा में शानदार काम किया है।प्रस्तुत है इसका संक्षिप्त सा विवरण :

THE HAPPY NEWS ON THE HIV EPIDEMIC FRONT CONTINUES .JUST WHEN UNITED NATIONS AIDS (UNAIDS)HAS PRAISED INDIA FOR REDUCING NEW HIV INFECTION RATE BY 57 % IN A DECADE ,NEWS FROM MUMBAI SHOWS THAT THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS PUT ON LIFE SAVING DRUGS HAS ALMOST DOUBLED IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS .FIGURES RELEASED BY THE MUMBAI DISTRICT AIDS CONTROL SOCIETY (MDACS)ON THE EVE OF WORLD AIDS DAY SHOW THAT 36,920 HIV PATIENTS IN THE CITY HAVE BEEN PUT ON ANTI -RETROVIRAL THERAPY (ART )OVER THE YEARS .

THE THERAPY HAS BEEN INSTRUEMENTAL  IN CHANGING THE PERCEPTION OF AIDS FROM BEING A DEATH SENTENCE TO A MANAGEABLE CHRONIC DISEASE .


"THIS IS A 96.2% INCREASE IN  THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS TAKING ART SINCE 2008,"SAID DR B ADSUL ,ADDITIONAL PROJECT DIRECTOR AT MDACS.THE NUMBER SHOW THAT THE  AIDS -CONTROL PROGRAMME IS SPREADING WIDER INTO THE COMMUNITY .THE CITY'S GOVERNMENT AIDED AIDS CONTROL PROGRAMME HAS REGISTRATIONS OF 67,326 PATIENTS ACROSS THE CITY .

"IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS ,WE HAVE MANAGED TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS COMING TO US FOR TREATMENT BY 60% ,"SAID DR ADSUL .THAT HIV -POSITIVE INDIVIDUALS ARE LIVING HEALTHIER LIVES CAN BE GAUGED FROM THE FACT ALMOST 40% OF THE REGISTERED PATIENTS DON'T NEED ART YET ,SAID AN MDACS OFFICIAL .

THE MDACS  ,WHICH WORKS UNDER THE CIVIC BODY ,OPERATED 69 CENTERS FOR TESTING AND COUNSELLING PATIENTS AS WELL AS 10 CENTERS TO DISTRIBUTE ART MEDICINES .

                    IN THE LAST FIVE YEARS ,THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE GETTING THEMSELVES CHECKED FOR THE DISEASE HAS GONE UP BY 39 % .THE NUMBER OF PREGNANT WOMEN GETTING THEMSELVES CHECKED FOR  HIV HAS INCREASED BY 5%. 


UNAIDS REPORTS A 52% REDUCTION IN NEW HIV INFECTIONS AMONG CHILDREN AND A COMBINED 33% REDUCTION AMONG ADULTS AND CHILDREN SINCE 2001

World closing in on Millennium Development Goal 6, globally the AIDS epidemic has been halted and reversed—race is on to reach universal access to HIV treatment.

Declining new HIV infections in children
New HIV infections among adults and children were estimated at 2.3 million in 2012, a 33% reduction since 2001. New HIV infections among children have been reduced to 260 000 in 2012, a reduction of 52% since 2001.

Fewer AIDS-related deaths 
AIDS-related deaths have also dropped by 30% since the peak in 2005 as access to antiretroviral treatmentexpands.

Progress in antiretroviral therapy
By the end of 2012, some 9.7 million people in low- and middle-income countries were accessingantiretroviral therapy, an increase of nearly 20% in just one year. In 2011, UN Member States agreed to a 2015 target of reaching 15 million people with HIV treatment.
More investments 
Despite a flattening in donor funding for HIV, which has remained around the same as 2008 levels, domestic spending on HIV has increased, accounting for 53% of global HIV resources in 2012. The total global resources available for HIV in 2012 was estimated at US$ 18.9 billion, US$ 3-5 billion short of the US$ 22-24 billion estimated to be needed annually by 2015.

In 2012, an estimated:
  • 35.3 million [32.2 million - 38.8 million] people globally were living with HIV
  • 2.3 million [1.9 million - 2.7 million] people became newly infected with HIV
  • 1.6 million [1.4 million - 1.9 million] people died from AIDS-related illnesses

10 goals for 2015


  • Sexual transmission of HIV reduced by half, including among young people, men who have sex with men and transmission in the context of sex work;
  • Vertical transmission of HIV eliminated and AIDS-related maternal deaths reduced by half;
  • All new HIV infections prevented among people who use drugs;
  • Universal access to antiretroviral therapy for people living with HIV who are eligible for treatment;
  • TB deaths among people living with HIV reduced by half;
  • All people living with HIV and households affected by HIV are addressed in all national social protection strategies and have access to essential care and support;
  • Countries with punitive laws and practices around HIV transmission, sex work, drug use or homosexuality that block effective responses reduced by half;
  • HIV-related restrictions on entry, stay and residence eliminated in half of the countries that have such restrictions;
  • HIV-specific needs of women and girls are addressed in at least half of all national HIV responses;
  • Zero tolerance for gender-based violence.

Comet Ison fizzles out around Sun


Comet Ison — touted as the “comet of the century” — has fizzled out during its swing around the Sun, leaving behind a trail of dust rolling through space and disappointing stargazers.
Comet Ison went around the Sun on Thursday. Several solar observatories watched the comet throughout this closest approach to the Sun, known as perihelion.

“While the fate of the comet is not yet established, it is likely that it did not survive the trip,” Nasa said.

The comet grew faint while within both the view of Nasa’s Solar TerrestrialRelations Observatory, and the joint European Space Agency and Nasa’s Solar and Heliospheric Observatory.

The comet was not visible at all in Nasa’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.
“We didn’t see Comet Ison in SDO,” said Dean Pesnell, project scientist for SDO.

“So we think it must have broken up and evaporated before it reached perihelion,” said Pesnell.

While this means that Comet Ison will not be visible in the night sky in December, the wealth of observations gathered of the comet over the last year will provide great research opportunities for some time.
One important question will simply be to figure out why it is no longer visible, scientists said.

As Comet Ison headed towards its closest approach to the Sun — known as perihelion, scientists have been watching through many observatories to see if the comet had already broken up under the intense heat and gravitational forces of the Sun.



The comet was too far away to discern how many pieces it was in, so instead researchers carefully measured how bright it is, which is used to infer its current state.

Less light can sometimes mean that more of the material has boiled off and disappeared, perhaps pointing to a disintegrated comet.

At times observations had suggested Ison was getting dimmer and might already be in pieces. However, over November 26-27, the comet once again brightened.

In the early hours of November 27, the comet had appeared in the view of solar observatories.
If the comet has already broken up, it should disintegrate completely as it makes its slingshot around the Sun.

 'Mediterranean diet with no breakfast best for 

diabetics '

For patients with diabetes ,it is better to eat a single large meal than several smaller meals through out the day ,a new study has found .

           Researchers at Linkoping   University in Sweden studied the effect on blood glucose ,blood lipids and different hormones after meals were compared using three different micro -nutrients compositions in patients with type 2 diabetes .

        The three diets were a low -fat diet , a low carbohydrate diet and a Mediterranean diet .The scientists included 21 patients that tested all three diets in a randomised order .During each test day blood samples were collected at six time points .

        The low -fat diet had a nutrient composition that has traditionally been recommended in the Nordic countries ,with about 55% of the total energy from carbohydrates . 

          The low carbohydrate diet had a relatively low content of carbohydrate ;approximately 20 per cent of the energy came from fat .

         The Mediterranean diet was composed of only a cup of black coffee for breakfast ,and with all the caloric content corresponding to breakfast and lunch during the other two test days accumulated to one large lunch .

       Furthermore ,the total caloric content included energy from 150 ml (women )to 200 ml (men )of French red wine to injest with the lunch.

       The food in the Mediterranean diet had an energy content from carbohydrate that was intermediate between the low fat -diet and the low carbohydrate meals ,and sources of fat were mainly olives and fatty fish .

          "The researchers  found that the low -carbohydrate diet increased blood glucose levels much less than the low -fat diet but that levels of triglycerides tended to be high compared to the low -fat diet ".


     Doctor Hnas Guldbrand ,who together with Professor Fredric Nystrom was the principal investigator of the study .

(१)फ़्लैट  बेली बनाये रखने के लिए कमर को कमनीय दर्शनीय कमर बनाये रखने के लिए दिन भर में आप कुल जितनी केलोरी खुराक के ज़रिये ले रहें हैं कमसे कम उसके एक चौथाई की आपूर्ति प्रोटीनों से होती रहे।

Postmenopausal women who consume sugar -sweetened drinks are at a higher risk of developing cancer of the endometrium -  the   lining of the uterus -a new study has warned .Researchers found that postmenopausal women who reported the highest intake of sugar sweetened beverages had a 78% increased risk for estrogen -dependent type I endometrial cancer .
