- A simple blood test can now accurately predict obesity in children, years before they first show signs of it. A blood test can read DNA which can be used to predict obesity levels in children and hence allow parents to make early changes to diet and physical activity.
- Researchers at the Universities of Southampton, Exeter and Plymouth used the test to assess the levels of epigenetic switches in the PGC1a gene — a gene that regulates fat storage in the body. The researchers used DNA samples from 40 children from the age of five until they were 14 years old.
Epigenetic switches take place through a chemical change called DNA methylation which controls how genes work and is set during early life.
The Southampton team found that the test, when carried out on children at five years old, differentiates between children with a high body fat and those with a low body fat when they were older. Results showed that a rise in DNA methylation levels of 10% at five years was associated with up to 12% more body fat at 14 years.
Results were independent of the child's gender, their amount of physical activity and their timing of puberty. Graham Burdge of the University of Southampton said, "It can be difficult to predict when children are very young, which children will put on weight or become obese. It is important to know which children are at risk because help can be offered early and before they start to gain weight."
(४)UK Schoolgirls to Get Free Contraceptives
- According to new guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), under-25s should be able to access emergency contraception more readily, including pills and the IUD (intrauterine device, or coil).
- According to new guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), under-25s should be able to access emergency contraception more readily, including pills and the IUD (intrauterine device, or coil).Although under-18 conception rates have fallen, England still has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Europe, said a statement by NICE. Improving contraceptive services will help ensure young people get the support they need and reduce unwanted pregnancies.NICE has advised commissioners of services in England to give all young people access to contraception and advice at convenient locations so no-one is denied services because of where they live."It is really important that sexual health services offering information and advice can be found in places where young people have access to them," professor Mike Kelly, director of the Centre for Public Health at NICE said. "Evidence clearly shows that the availability of contraception reduces the rate of unwanted pregnancies. Local planners and providers of services must make sure that what they offer is right for their area," said Kelly.According to the guidelines, young women should be informed that an intrauterine device is a more effective form of emergency contraception than the oral method and can also be used on an ongoing basis. Young women should have timely access to emergency contraception using an intrauterine device, NICE said."Young people often find contraceptive services and advice difficult to locate. This can be for a number of reasons. They may not know where services are, who provides them or when they are open," Kelly added."They can also be wrongly worried that information they give may not be treated confidentially. For that reason, this guidance focuses on ensuring they receive culturally sensitive, confidential, non-judgemental and empathic advice and support tailored to their individual needs," said Kelly. Many of the recommendations made in the new guidance from NICE will cost nothing to implement. They look at existing services to ensure everything is being done to give all young people the support and advice they need. The new guidance focuses on helping those up to the age of 25.
(५)Goats are smart with excellent long-term memories: scientists
- Goats are much smarter than they may appear at first glance, a study has shown. The animals quickly learn how to solve complex tasks and have excellent long-term memories, scientists say.Researchers trained a group of goats to retrieve food from a box by pulling on a lever, then lifting it.On average the goats figured out the multi-step solution within 12 attempts. Ten months later, it took them less than two minutes to remember how they did it.Dr Alan McElligott, from Queen Mary, University of London, said: "Our results challenge the common misconception that goats aren't intelligent animals - they have the ability to learn complex tasks and remember them for a long time."This could explain why they are so successful in colonising new environments."It was the first time scientists had investigated the ability of goats to learn complicated physical tasks.Co-author Dr Elodie Briefer, from ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, said: "The speed at which the goats completed the task at 10 months compared to how long it took them to learn indicates excellent long-term memory."Before each learning session, some of the 12 goats had a chance to watch another goat demonstrate the task. But those without a demonstrator were just as quick to learn as goats that observed what to do."This shows that goats prefer to learn on their own rather than by watching others," said Dr Briefer.Goats are unusually adaptable to harsh environments and good at finding food sources in the wild, both traits that might be linked to their intelligence, the researchers believe. The findings are reported in the latest edition of the journal Frontiers in Zoology.Cleverer than you think: A mountain goat tries to eat grains of corn in a vending machine ata French zoo.
